Ask anybody and they will tell you that  Jim and his staff live up to the Lincoln ideal of mastery of the law, honesty and integrity.  And, they are down to earth “just folks” as well.  They treat all clients with respect they deserve and that means clients are not equals – clients are “the boss.”

Jim Schuster, Certified Elder Law Attorney

Jim Schuster has been licensed as an attorney since 1978 and practices Elder Law. He is now retired but is still active in educating attorneys and consumers about Elder Law. Thus this website carries on his mission of helping our Seniors, which title he can proudly claim for himself!

  • An active member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
  • Author of many articles published in the NAELA News and NAELA Journal, an education source for Elder Law Attorneys. He is an Editor on the NAELA Journal Board of Editors.
  • Former member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys’ Council of Advanced Practitioners, an “invitation only” honor.
  • Former Chair of the Elder Law and Advocacy Section of the Michigan State Bar.
  • He was the fourth attorney to be a certified elder law attorneys in Michigan.  Certification by the A.B.A. accredited National Elder Law Foundation
  • One of the first attorneys in Michigan to practice elder law. Wrote the first article on Medicaid in the practice of  Elder Law, published in the Michigan Bar Journal in February 2002
  • Jim has been a featured speaker at the annual AAA 1B Caregiver Expo; a member of the Board of Directors of Chronic Illness Coalition and Senior Coordinating Aging Network, Advisory Board Member of Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology.
  • Jim has worked with hundreds of clients and intimately understands the difficulties of aging.
Prior to attending law school Jim Schuster was a social worker for the Department of Social Services (now the Department of Human Services). After he passed the bar he worked as a law clerk for United States District Judge Noel P. Fox and as a Judge for the Chippewa Ottawa Conservation Court. He served on the Council of the General Practice Section of the State Bar of Michigan from 1985 to 1997 in all capacities including as Chair of the Section in 1991.

Jim has had articles on Elder Law published in the Michigan Bar Journal, including the  article titled “Medicaid and the Practice of Law,” Michigan Lawyers Weekly, the Detroit Legal News and Laches, the publication of the Oakland County Bar Association. He has also presented course material for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Jim’s involvement in the aging community has been extensive.  He has been a member of the professional speakers bureau of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Michigan Chapter. He works in association with the Geriatric Social Workers,  Wayne State University’s Institute on Gerontology, and the Area Agency on Aging being a return featured speaker at the AAA 1B Caregiver Expo. He has partnered with the Wayne State’ University Institute of Gerontology to present the annual Elder Advocate Conference.

Dawn Roffey

Dawn Roffey is the  paralegal in the office, handling all matters of communication and managing the Jim Schuster Facebook page!  She attended the University of Michigan-Dearborn and received her Legal Assistant associate’s degree from Macomb Community College.

Dawn is involved with rescuing and rehoming Scottish Terriers and educating good pet owners! Have dog questions? Ask Dawn!
